Work Study

Work Study Program Policies and Procedures

General Guidelines for the Work Study Program

  • The Work Study jobs are part of a financial aid package designed to assist families who have indicated a need for assistance.
  • The Business Manager will provide the FACTS Grant & Aid applications for     families who desire to apply for Work Study assistance.
  • Families need to apply each year to be    considered.
  • Family members, but not other students or friends, may work to assist the student    receiving Work Study assistance.
  • The Work Study assistance, as a part of the financial aid package, is a privilege, not a right. Fifty percent of the assigned hours must be completed in each semester.  Hours not completed in designated semesters will be billed to the student’s account.
  • The Business Manager will send quarterly reports to each family.  Monthly reports will be available upon request.

Procedure for Awarding Work Study Assistance

  • Oak Grove Lutheran School makes use of the FACTS Grant and Aid Assessment Service to process and determine the amount of financial aid a student is to receive based upon the information that has been provided by the family.
  • Mandatory discounts are included in the dollars available for financial assistance.
  • Mandatory discounts include:
    • Oak Grove sibling discount
    • Oak Grove staff member discount
    • Concordia staff discount
    • Clergy discount

Procedure for Making Work Study Assignments

  • Work Study assignments will be made by the Dean of Students.
  • Work Study assignments, whenever possible, will FIRST be used to fill Oak Grove’s needs.
  • Oak Grove staff will be given an opportunity to make requests for Work Study students to assist them in their respective area.
  • After Work Study assistance has been granted, contact the Dean of Students to receive information concerning job assignments at 701.237.0210.

Potential Work Study Opportunities

The first Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to noon will be set aside for students to work on campus.  Students must sign up in advance with the Dean of Students.  Check the calendar at www.oakgrovelutheran.com for actual dates.

The following are examples, but not a comprehensive list of jobs that qualify for Work Study.  Jobs will be assigned by the Dean of Students.

  • Bookstore operator
  • Library aide
  • Selected maintenance duties
  • Summer campus assistance
  • Event staff (gate receptionists, clean-up, event set-up/take-down, etc.)
  • Selected administrative office tasks
  • Concession stand
  • Administrative/supervision task by an adult
  • Lunch room aide

Even though there is a need and desire on Oak Grove’s part to have students participate in the Work Study Program, there is a difference  between volunteer jobs and those that qualify for Work Study assistance.  For example, a student working in an extra-curricular venue as a trainer, student manager, statistician, scorekeeper, or working with the student organization or serving food at the Ice Cream Social, etc CANNOT expect to receive Work Study compensation.  The Dean of Student Affairs, in consultation with the Chief Administrative Officer, will make the final decision regarding what is an acceptable Work Study job.

Responsibility for Documenting Work Study Hours

  • The student doing Work Study will be given a form to document the time spending on the job.  The form must be completed immediately after finishing the Work Study assignment.
  • The supervisor in charge will sign off on the form and return it to the Administration Office.
  • No credit for hours worked will be given if a form is not submitted.

For more information regarding the Work Study Program, contact the Oak Grove Dean of Student Affairs Morgan Forness or Office Manager Lynn Peterson at 701.237.0210.

TeacHaiti Chili Feed
Posted: May 6, 08

On May 16, Oak Grove’s Justice League will sponsor a chili feed to raise money and awareness for TeacHaiti.  TeacHaiti is a non-profit organization supporting education scholarships in Haiti.  The organization was founded by Oak Grove graduate Miquette Denie, class of 2002.  Miquette grew up like millions of other children in Haiti, with little access to clothing, food or healthcare.  Miquette writes, "because education has given me the audacity to dream dreams I had never thought possible before, I want to do the same for these brilliant children."

The money raised at this event will go to support Oak Grove's Justice League commitment to providing annual education scholarships to Haitian children who would not otherwise be able to attend school.  The chili feed will take place in Oak Grove's Eid Center from 5:15 to 7:00 p.m., between the Middle School and High School choir concerts.  The event is a free-will offering.
