Oak Grove's Shared Values: Service and Leadership

Seniors Jordyn Berger and Alex Widmer reflect on their experiences with flood preparation and lessons learned while giving back to those in need.

Oak Grove students actively participate in a variety of service projects every year including Fill the Dome, raising money to purchase animals through Heifer International, and helping the elementary students  collect coins for the Ronald McDonald House. “Almost all of my classes have participated in Fill the Dome, and other donation projects throughout the years,” said Alex. “This has really shown me that while education is very important, being a good Christian and helping out those in need is more important.”

Jordyn and Alex both participated in the junior class mission trip to New Orleans in 2012, where they helped those recovering from hurricane Katrina. “It was a lot of hard work but I loved being able to serve others while having fun as a class,” said Jordyn.

These are just a few lessons Alex & Jordyn have learned while attending Oak Grove. Their experiences have
helped shape them into the upstanding citizens they are today, and they’re both excited for the future. “All of the flood work, mission trips, basketball practices/games, and classes have not only prepared me for college, but also for the rest of my life,” said Alex. “Having chapel every day and having a Christian studies class has really encouraged me to have faith and be a strong Christian man.”

This coming July, Jordyn will be traveling to Ethiopia to volunteer in orphanages, and deliver aid and supplies to mountainside communities. “This has been my dream since I was a second grader,” said Jordyn. “I couldn’t be more excited to go and see what the Lord’s going to do through this trip!”

These remarkable individuals exemplify perseverance, and the importance of overcoming difficult obstacles to assist those in need.  As the apostle Paul wrote, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the
others.” -Philippians 2:3-4
