Grover Choir Squad Tour Info - May 9, 08

The Grover Choir Squad will have its Spring Performance tour Monday, May 12.  We will leave campus around 9:00 a.m. then perform at 9:30 a.m. at Bethany Home, followed by Oak Grove’s north campus chapel at 10:20-10:30 a.m.  From there we will visit the Hjemkomst “Toy Tech” display.  At 11:30 a.m. or so we’ll head out to West Acres food court where we will dine in splendor!

TeacHaiti Chili Feed - May 6, 08

On May 16, Oak Grove’s Justice League will sponsor a chili feed to raise money and awareness for TeacHaiti.  TeacHaiti is a non-profit organization supporting education scholarships in Haiti.  The organization was founded by Oak Grove graduate Miquette Denie, class of 2002.  Miquette grew up like millions of other children in Haiti, with little access to clothing, food or healthcare.  Miquette writes, "because education has given me the audacity to dream dreams I had never thought possible before, I want to do the same for these brilliant children." 


The money raised at this event will go to support Oak Grove's Justice League commitment to providing annual education scholarships to Haitian children who would not otherwise be able to attend school.  The chili feed will take place in Oak Grove's Eid Center from 5:15 to 7:00 p.m., between the Middle School and High School choir concerts.  The event is a free-will offering.


State Qualifiers - May 6, 08
Junior Scott Anderson has qualified for the state track meet May 23-24 in Bismarck.  He will participate in the 1600 meter run.  Oak Grove's 4x800 boys' relay of Scott Anderson, Wade Liu, Paul Berg, and Andy Rothfusz has also qualified.

Congratulations to Tyrone Yang, the winner of the Oak Grove Idol competition.  Runners up included Jeffrey Lackmann, Elise Tweten, and Paul Berg and his band - Joel Schock, Jamie Stallman, Tony Lee and Andrew Widmer.  All participants helped to make the show so entertaining!

PTAC Meeting - Apr 24, 08
Please join us for the final PTAC meeting of the school year on May 1, at 6:30 p.m. in the Eid Center on the north campus.  We will be electing officers; reviewing our mission and vision statements; and looking ahead in preparation for next year.

Oak Grove Lutheran School is pleased to announce that it has met and exceeded its original Centennial Campaign goal and will continue to fund raise until the school reaches $18 million.  As part of Phase III of its Centennial Campaign, Oak Grove is launching a Health and Wellness Initiative which includes integrating innovative health and wellness programs into the curriculum.  This summer, the school will also break ground on needed capital improvements, funded by the campaign, which include renovating the Darwin Gorder Gymnasium, and adding classrooms and a wellness center at the middle and high school, and adding classrooms, upgrading the kitchen and gymnasium at the elementary school.

Head Coach Steve Carnal has announced his retirement as Oak Grove Lutheran School’s head boys’ basketball coach after 28 years as head coach and 36 year of coaching career.  The Grovers ended the 2007-2008 season with a record of 13-10.  Read on for more information on Coach Carnal's career.

Oak Grove Head Football Coach Kyle Bakken has accepted a football coaching position at Concordia College with Coach Terry Horan.  Coach Bakken will be working with the Cobber defensive line this fall.  Read on for more information.

Basketball Honors - Mar 6, 08
Senior Cory Samson was chosen for the All District 2 team, which is awarded to those student-athletes that have shown athletic excellence and leadership in North Dakota’s District 2 Tournament.  The award is voted on by the coaches in District 2.  Congrats!  Cory was also named to the Wild Rice all-conference team for the second time.

A music team from Carpenter’s Tools International (CTI) Music Ministries, an international music ministry, will be appearing at Oak Grove Lutheran School’s north campus during chapel on Wednesday, March 12 at 9:55 a.m. in the Scheels Center for the Performing Arts.  Read on for more details.


Choir Tour 2008 - Mar 5, 08
The Oak Grove 44-voice Concert Choir, directed by Aaron Zinter, will leave on its annual tour on March 28.  The choir will travel to the southwest this year, visit cities such as Mesa, Tucson, and Sun City.  The group will cover 3,919 miles on their 10-day tour, visiting 10 states, giving nine concerts and singing at two Sunday morning church services.  Read on for the complete itinerary and concert locations and times.  Read on for details, including information on the Home Concert Dinner.

Region Tournament - Feb 27, 08

The Oak Grove boys’ basketball team has proceeded to the Region Tournament!  The team will take on Hankinson on Monday, March 3 at the Fargo Civic Center.  The Grovers play in the last game of the evening, beginning around 8:00 p.m.  You are invited to cheer them on to victory!

Sylvan Parent Forum - Feb 4, 08
A Sylvan Parent Forum will be held at the elementary school on Monday, February 25 at 6:30 p.m. The forum will cover test taking strategies skills, including standardized testing.  All parents are welcome to attend.

The 2008 Shrine Bowl participants have been selected, either to play or as alternates.

Attention Middle School parents: Is your student missing something he or she took on the ski trip?  Many items were left behind, including a helmet, goggles, boots, pillows, and clothing.  All items left behind are currently located in Jackson Hall, first floor, by the student phone.  Items not claimed by 4:00 p.m. on January 25 will be donated to charity.

Volleyball Success! - Dec 3, 07

The Oak Grove volleyball team had a very successful 2007 season on the court.  With an overall record of 26-11, the team ended strong in the district and played well at the regional tournament.   The Grovers won the Wild Rice Conference tournament and were the number two seed for the district tournament, at which they took fourth place.  At the Region 1 tournament, the Grovers found their niche, only losing in the championship game to Lisbon, 3-2.


Senior Jessica Holaday and junior Becca Conant were chosen for the All Region Tournament Team.  Becca Conant, Jessica Holaday and senior Helena Shanks were named to the All District II team.  Jessica and Becca were also selected for the Wild Rice Conference All-Conference Team.  Congratulations!


Guatemala Mission Experience - Dec 3, 07

All Grovers invited to take part in a mission awareness program to San Lucas, Toliman, Guatemala, July 31 to August 8, 2008.  For the past two summers, Oak Grove Missions Coordinator Bob Noel has led groups to this beautiful Mayan town, nestled between the shores of Lake Atitlan and the Toliman and Atitlan volcanoes.

Swim Results - Dec 3, 07
Eighth grader Connor Hoff and sophomore Mairin Jamesom participated in the North Dakota State Swim Meet November 9-10 in Grand Forks.  Connor placed sixth in the 200 meter medley relay, tenth in the 100 meter back stroke and seventeenth in the 100 meter butterfly for the Shanley/Oak Grove swim team.  This is the second year she participated at the state meet.  Mairin took sixth place in diving.  Congratulations!

Oak Grove’s football team is the 2007 Class 2A State Champions!  In a crushing win at the FargoDome, the Grovers beat the Devils Lake Firebirds 28 to 0.  Coach Kyle Bakken was honored with the 2007 Class 2A Coach of the Year, as well.  The dome was full of fans in maroon cheering the team on to victory!

Congratulations to the volleyball team on their win in the Region 1 Tournament on Monday!  They beat Wyndmere 3-0.  The team advances to the semi-final game against Maple Valley.  The game, played at Enderlin High school, will start at 6:00 p.m.  Good Luck!!

PLAN Test - Nov 2, 07

The PLAN test is the preACT test offered to sophomores as a way to get ready for taking the ACT their junior and/or senior year.  The information that we get back from the PLAN test helps students check that they are on track in their preparation for college.  ALL sophomores planning to attend a 2 or 4-year college are highly encouraged to take the PLAN test.


Sophomores will have the opportunity to take the PLAN on Tuesday, November 27, from 8:15 to 11:30 a.m.  The cost is $10.00.  Checks should be made payable to Oak Grove.  Students can sign up in the high school office.


Oak Grove will be participating in the largest youth led food drive in Fargo’s history, aiming to bring together youth of all ages for a common good. Students from the elementary to the high school level all over the Fargo-Moorhead area are joining together to fill the floor of the FargoDome for local food pantries.

Oak Grove’s marketing class at the high school is opening a coffee shop called HeBrews Coffee.  The students in the class performed a market analysis, researched the process of starting a business and proposed opening the shop to administrators.  The class project is turning into a coffee shop, which will serve two flavors of cappuccino, hot chocolate and healthy snacks.

Boys Tennis Results - Oct 12, 07

The Shanley-Oak Grove-Park Christian boys’ tennis team finished strong this year, finishing with a 5-2 record in the EDC.  The team finished third in the EDC and went on to compete well at the state tournament.  Three Oak Grove students participated on the team – Senior Johnny Tsai, Junior Rodrigo Otero and Sophomore Peter Frei.  The team placed fourth at the state tournament and placed fourth in doubles.  Congrats!

Two Oak Grove classes competed in a water rocket competition on Friday, October 12 at 9:55 a.m. on the Oak Grove football field.  The eighth grade science class competed against the junior/senior physics class to see who could launch a homemade water rocket further.  Eighth grader Jared Jackson won the competition with a launch of 324 feet.  It is the third year in a row that the eighth graders beat the physics class.


Check Presentation - Oct 12, 07

Fargo-Moorhead area students will present a check of their fund raised dollars to Northwood Public Schools tonight , Friday, October 12 at the Northwood football game against Park River.  Oak Grove Lutheran School and Fargo South students will present a check for $4,879.58 to Northwood prior to their 7:10 p.m. game at the Alerus Center in Grand Forks.  Combined with supplemental funds from the members of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, the students raised a grand total of $5,879.58 for the tornado damaged school.

School is underway and we are excited to see our enrollment numbers once again increase.  This time last year Oak Grove saw its highest enrollment ever.    I am happy to report that we once again have the highest enrollment that Oak Grove has ever seen – 488 students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade!

Senior Levi Arneson set the single game rushing record for Grover football with his 324 yards rushing in the August 25 game against Kindred.  Congrats!

Freshmen and new student elections will be held on Monday, September 10 during high school lunch in the Eid Center.  Please sign up in the north campus office by the end of the day on Friday, September 7 if you would like to appear on the ballot.

Oak Grove Lutheran School will launch its Tablet PC Initiative on Monday, July 30th starting at 8:30 a.m.  in the Scheels Center for the Performing Arts.  The day will begin with a welcome, recognition of technology partners, and student and faculty testimony.  At 9:15 a.m. Doug Burgum, senior vice president of Microsoft™ Corporation will deliver a keynote address titled, “Unlimited Potential.”  Faculty will be trained on new technology and software July 30 through August 1.  They will complete a full-day in-service with Dr. Deborah Lowther, a nationally known educator, author and technology researcher on July 31.
