I know my nutrition, sure I do. I’m a lifetime member of Weight Watchers, have had dinner with Jenny Craig (not the person but the meal) on numerous occasions, and had been on more diets than you have fingers (make that teeth). But check out the following quiz to see how YOU do on picking the best of the worst nutrition choices. I definitely did NOT get a 100%.
It’s Saturday night and drive through is definitely on the menu. Which of the following is the BEST choice?
1. A Taco Bell soft taco with seasoned beef, lettuce, tomato & cheese
2. A McDonald’s cheeseburger (how about a quarter-pounder)
3. A Wendy’s garden veggie fresh stuffed pita (my pick)
4. A Burger King broiled chicken sandwich (sounds boring)
Surprise! It’s NOT the stuffed pita. The Taco Bell soft taco is the healthiest. This taco provides vitamin A, calcium from the cheese, and it's relatively low in fat. Don't be afraid to load up on the salsa, too. Salsa is zesty, low-fat and contains vitamin C.
At a Shanley/Oak Grove baseball game, which snack would keep the health-food umpire from calling you "out?"
1. A chocolate-covered vanilla ice- cream bar (I wish)
2. A box of Cracker Jack (we only eat it for the prize, right?)
3. A hot dog on a bun (gross- aren’t there pig lips in those?)
4. A 1 cup bag of salted peanuts (my choice)
Hot dog! This ballpark favorite offers more body-building nutrition than most other snacks at the stadium. But here's the bite: Hot dogs can be high in fat, especially if you order the extra-long or extra-plump kind
You've been upside down, twirled around and shaken from side-to-side - but you're never too queasy to eat! What amusement park munchie would make the best choice?
1. A cone of cotton candy (eeuuuwww- my teeth hurt already)
2. A bean and cheese burrito (beans & I don’t get along)
3. A 6 piece serving of chicken nuggets (aren’t there chicken lips in those?)
4. A baked potato with sour cream & chives (my pick of the day)
I WAS FINALLY RIGHT!!! Despite the fat and calories in sour cream, the baked potato is best for you. It's rich in fiber, vitamin C and other key nutrients. To make it even more healthy, put the sour cream on the side and just dab in for a little flavor (really hard to do but okay, it’s worth a try).
Of the following choices, which would be the healthiest snack to eat at the movies:
1. 1/2-ounce box of Raisinets (nope)
2. A medium popcorn, popped in oil, with salt and no butter (boring)
3. A 3-ounce box of Junior Mints (remember Kramer on Seinfeld eating these while watching a surgery and one fell in?)
4. A 3 1/2-ounce box of Goobers (gotta have the Goobers)
None of these foods are "healthy," but Junior Mints are the best of the bunch. Although they are made almost entirely of sugar, these candies are much lower in fat than most movie snacks and have fewer calories in comparison. And, believe it or not, you can get 15% of the average daily requirement of calcium from a box of them.
If you got all four right, you are a health food guru who probably eats tofu for lunch and my hat is off to you. If you were like me, it just goes to show, we can never stop learning, right???
