Elementary Spelling Bee

In just a little over a month, we will be hosting our Spelling Bee for our elementary students here at Oak Grove in grades 1 through 5.  This is a voluntary activity and is sent home in the event your student wishes to participate.  It is not a requirement.  We have been sending a list of words home now for a couple of years during this time and have had some very positive feedback about that.  The model for this has changed this school year, where words are separated into 3 categories instead of by grade level.

The 2020 Spelling Bee schedule is as follows:

  • Primary Spelling Bee – Grades 1, 2 – Preliminary Test – February 13, 2020
  • Primary Spelling Bee – Grades 1, 2 – Finalists Bee – February 20, 2020 @ 1:45pm
  • Intermediate Spelling Bee – Grades 3,4,5 – Preliminary Test – February 13, 2020
  • Intermediate Spelling Bee – Grades 3,4,5 – Finalists Bee – February 21, 2020 @ 1:40pm

During the finals, parents are invited to watch the children.

Our Spelling Bee is patterned after the Scripps National Spelling Bee rules.  Scripps has sponsored spelling bees both nationally and internationally since the 1920’s when the first bees were held in our nation.  Due to the timing of our Spelling Bee, there is not an opportunity to advance beyond our school bee for Scripps.

Spelling Bee Study Guides:

How do the children use the study guide?

Recommendation – With this having a different look, the suggestion would be for all students to study the One Bee words, then move forward from there.  There are a total of 450 words in the study packet, and should we move beyond that, I will have a list that will challenge us, as I have in previous years.

Thank you, Oak Grove Families!  Thank you for giving us the opportunity and privilege to serve you and your children.
